Fiuza & Bright

A leading Australian-influenced winery in the Tejo region in the hands of the third generation of the Mascarenhas Fiuza family.

Fiuza & Bright

Tejo, Portugal

This leading winery in the heart of the Tejo region was founded at the start of the 20th century by Joaquim Mascarenhas Fiuza, the 11th generation of the Fronteira Family, one of the most important Portuguese noble families. He combined his love of wine with a passion for sailing and participated in three Olympic Games.

The Fiuza & Bright partnership stemmed from 1986, when the winery pioneered a study into international grape varieties in Portuguese soils with Australian winemaker Peter Bright.

Joaquim Mascarenhas Fiuza left the company to his two daughters when he died at the age of 102 in 2010, and the family has continued to innovate.

“Now in the hands of the third generation of the Mascarenhas Fiuza family, this large Portuguese winery has a 100 year history. Catapulted onto the international scene by Australian influence during the 1980’s, Fiuza pursued a significant commercial strategy and have become one of the largest players in the forward-thinking, active Tejo wine association. This winery balances a portfolio of indigenous and international grape varieties with the demands of export markets, having created their own prominent branding but also being very much open to customer exclusives.”

Fiuza Alvarinho

Close to the Atlantic, but further south than the Galician heartland of Albariño, you’d expect riper grapes. But these early-picked, cool-fermented grapes combine the citrus and tropical fruit profile of the variety yet still retain that lifted minerality that so pleases consumers looking for a change from Sauvignon or Pinot Grigio. With its lowish alcohol, this is excellent aperitif wine, but also partners well with an array of delicately flavoured foods.

Fiuza 3 Castas

A bold blend of native Touriga Nacional with international Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has plenty of wild cherry and spicy, briar character that delivers a soft, velvety palate bolstered by the compact ripe tannins associated with well-crafted Portuguese reds. The Tejo region is so well located to create great value, accessible and attractive wines that have wide appeal.
