Feudo Solaria – Cantine Grasso
Sicily, Italy
“Some say Mamertino was Julius Caesar’s favourite wine, and the story of viticulture in this NE corner of Sicily sparked my imagination. Roll forward 2,000 years (passing 2004 when Mamertino was recognised as a DOC), and you find a handful of wineries producing Mamertino from a meagre 40 hectares of vineyard. Nearly 140 years of Feudo Solaria have marked the winery’s progress and today the 5th generation are still building on firm foundations with their predominantly indigenous grape varieties that are flagships for the region.”

Sette Aje Inzolio-Catarratto
A 50:50 blend of these two classic southern Italian grape varieties, where the Inzolio brings a nutty character and the Catarratto adds body, richness and some mineral freshness to the wine. Floral on the nose, with hints of white peach and pear that continue to the palate, where they join a lifted cut grass and herbal presence, this is a delightfully versatile wine unencumbered by any wood, with a distinct and impactful finish. Always vintage specific.

Mamertino di Milazzo Rosso
Made with 90% Nero d’Avola and 10% Nocera, this classic red wine from the Milazzo district sees six months in French and American barrels and further time in bottle to round out the generous black fruit. Interestingly complex but very well integrated, the palate shows many layers. Nocera is a very old aromatic grape variety dating back to Roman times, rarely cultivated, but in its apogee here in Sicily, where it is a mandatory requirement in Mamertino wines.
